Commemoration Service 2005

COMMEMORATION SERVICE 2005
WESTMINSTER ABBEY

In 2005 the Service to commemorate the life and work of Florence Nightingale was held at Westminster Abbey at 6.15p.m on Wednesday 11th May. This Service also celebrated the professions of nursing,  midwifery and all staff, both qualified and unqualified working in these services, are invited to attend.

The year 2005 was also the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Crimean War in which Florence Nightingale made a significant contribution to the care of the armed forces.

During the Service, the Procession of the Lamp took place. The Lamp will be carried by Karen Hill a Scholar of the Florence Nightingale Foundation and it was escorted by student nurses from the University of Huddersfield. On arrival at the alter the Lamp was handed to Patrick McGreevy a Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholar, he passed it onto Lynne Paterson Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholar. This represents the passing of knowledge from one nurse to another and highlights the diversity of care given by nurses for the benefit of humanity.

2000 nurses, midwifes, healthcare professionals and guests attended the Service

Mrs Rosemary Kennedy, the Chief Nursing Officer for the Welsh Assembly Government, gave the Address.

The Choir of Westminster Abbey sang the Service.

The 2006 Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service will be held on Wednesday 10 May 2006, 6.15pm in Westminster Abbey. Full details will be published nearer that time.
