Students' Day

Date: Wednesday 11 May, 2011
Venue: The Governor's Hall, St Thomas' Hospital

This year's Students' Day was attended by 59 student nurses from within the UK.

The day began with a Plenary Discussion session where students were invited to raise questions or concerns to a panel of senior nurses.

The Panel included:

  • Professor Shona Brown - Executive Director for Organisational Change, Whipps Cross Hospital, visiting Professor of Nursing and Strategic Development, London South Bank University.
  • Professor Ann Marie Rafferty CBE - Head of School, Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, Kings College London
  • Professor Eileen Sills CBE - Chief Nurse, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Geoffrey Walker OBE - Modern Matron/Senior Nurse Manager, Cardiology and Medicine, Poole Hospital

After a very successful and thought provoking discussion the students continued their day with a tour of the Florence Nightingale Museum, a screening of Florence Nightingale: Her Life & Legacy, followed by a visit to The Florence Nightingale Chapel, Westminster Abbey before attending a very uplifting Commemoration Service.

We had a wonderful response after the Students' Day and Service - the following feedback was received from students:

‘[...] thank you for a wonderful day yesterday. I found it to be both informative and enjoyable [...]'

‘[...] I attended the Student's day today and I just wanted to say thank you so much for the opportunity. I had a wonderful day and really enjoyed it. It was good to meet other students from around the UK and the service at the Abbey was beautiful [...]'
